The Success Process: How To Get From Where You’re At To Somewhere That Doesn’t Suck

“Buy houses with no money down!”

I had been surfing through channels desperately looking for something – anything – that might spark an ounce of hope in me and keep me from pulling the trigger.

I subtly paused on a Girls Gone Wild commercial by accident but ultimately settled on a random old guy talking about buying real estate without any money, credit, experience, brains, conscience, self-esteem or clothing.

“This is it,” I thought. “My dreams are about to come true. I don’t have hardly any of those things.”

According to this guy you didn’t need anything but his CDs to buy a bunch of houses and start going out on boats regularly. I wasn’t sure how it worked exactly, but based on how easy he was making it sound, I figured you just took the CDs, handed them out to people, they listened to them and then handed you the keys to their house.

Simple enough.

I set the Nintendo Duck Hunt gun down, picked up the phone and dialed the 800 number on the screen.

Call Center Operator: Hello! Welcome to the life of your dreams and the end of your personal nightmare – how may I sell you? I mean help you?

Me:  Wow. It’s 2:30 am. I wasn’t sure anyone would answer the phone. What are you guys in India or something?

Call Center Operator: No sir. We’re in Utah. We DO NOT SLEEP here, sir.

Me: Oh, ok. Well send me those CDs. I need them now. Can you have one of your Mormons same-day courier them to me with their special powers so I can get started this afternoon?

Call Center Operator: Of course, sir. That will be a $49 Magical Mormon Shipping Fee, which brings your total to $348. Would you like to super-size your order with a $15,000 coaching package?

Me: No thanks.

Call Center Operator: Damn it. Ok, well thank you sir! Your package will arrive in about 15 minutes. Enjoy the dream!

I hung up the phone more excited than I could ever remember being that whole entire week.

Goodbye Rat Race, hello Freedom. I couldn’t wait to break the news to my boss.

3 years later …

“I seriously hate my boss.”

I was sharing at a local AA meeting. I didn’t even drink, but these people were really good listeners so I just came to vent about whatever was irritating me that particular week.

“He’s holding me down, man. The system is rigged against me. I don’t see a way out.”

Dave, one of the regulars who, as it turns out, was a multi-millionaire with a penchant for Goldschlager first thing in the morning, stood up and slurred the following words that changed the course of my life:

“Shon … at hwon point hyou had a dweam. Gyo back to that.”

“Hmm. Ok did you just say ‘son, at one point you had a dream – go back to that’?”

Apparently he passed out because he had decided to lie down on the floor and not respond.

“Someone make sure he’s breathing please.  And why do we keep having these things in the morning anyway? You know that’s a bad time for Dave.”

But I got the point. I did have a dream, and it was to get rich with real estate. True, passing out those CDs three years ago hadn’t worked. But there had to be another way. I made up my mind to make it happen no matter what the cost. I marched out of that meeting a man on a mission and got to work.

Within just a few months I was staring at a check for $19,000 payable to someone that went by my name. I had to punch myself in the face to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

It was from a house I had bought and sold – no money down.

The following is a brief explanation of how I went from Death By Duck Hunt to $19,000 Payday and why that was the last check I’d see for another year until I finally became a multi-millionaire.

“Success is a science; if you have the conditions, you get the result.”
– Oscar Wilde

After building a number of different businesses and attempting to achieve a host of lofty goals, a distinct pattern has emerged – a way things tend to happen.

Let’s call this The Success Process.

The Success Process

I want to share this process with you now, but with one caveat: this applies strictly to those of us who have previously gone through the inner-Success Process. Meaning we have done the hard work of improving ourselves holistically to the point where we are strong and wise enough to make it through the outer-Success Process if we just know how it works.

If we neglect the inner-Success Process (which I’ll be sharing with you in a future post), then our lives are going to be a repetitive and insane series of tepid tiptoes out of our comfort zone and mad dashes right back in.

Kind of like this …

It’s like a Polar Bear Plunge except pain is chasing us out instead of icy water.

Let’s begin.

The Success Process starts with the Imagination Phase. We have an idea, vision or dream of some sort. It could be a new business, a novel project within an existing business, a different career path or a work of art of some sort.

It’s something that resonates deep within us and generates excitement.

It’s bigger or different than anything we’ve done in the past, but we believe we can do it.

We believe this because we have the perfect combination of high hopes, fantastically high levels of self-confidence and complete ignorance as to what exactly we’re getting ourselves in to and just how excruciatingly painful it will be.

“All you need is ignorance and confidence and the success is sure.”
– Mark Twain

So far so good.

If whatever goal we’re trying to achieve is something outside our expertise, the process moves in to the Preparation Phase. Here we learn everything we can in every way we can about this new thing.

We seek out a mentor, read books, go to seminars – the whole shebang. We immerse ourselves in this new world. If we don’t get overwhelmed and drown in the ocean of knowledge we get to move on.

Next we proceed to the Action Phase where we take concrete action toward our goal. This inevitably requires us to overcome a fear of some sort. If nothing else, a fear of the unknown.

If our goal is to start a new business we begin creating the product.

If our goal is to write a book, we begin writing.

If our goal is to be an actor, we sell our soul to Satan and book a one-way ticket to hell – I mean L.A.

And so on.

Once we’ve gone out on a limb and taken somewhat of a blind step of faith, something genuinely amazing tends to happen: we have some sort of immediate success.

It might be big; it might be small. Whatever it is, it’s always significant.

If we’re working on a new business, maybe the product just effortlessly comes together and it’s mind blowing. Or we score a big deal of some sort right out the gate.

If we’re writing a book, possibly the first chapter quickly flows out of us and shocks us to death with its profundity and wit.

If we’re acting, we get an immediate opportunity to exchange sexual favors for a supporting role in a reverse mortgage commercial.

We’re always pleasantly surprised, but we shouldn’t be because it’s just a part of the process.

Life is rewarding us for taking a step of faith and whispering, “keep going.”

Without this immediate success the next part of the process would be simply unbearable. We’re getting a taste of the dream to whet our appetite and provide the motivation necessary to make it through what I call “This Part Of The Success Process Sucks Big Hairy Knuckles.”

But before we get to that, let me just say this: you may be sitting there thinking to yourself, “Wait a minute. I’ve tried things in the past and didn’t get that immediate success. What the heck? You are a LIAR, Preston Ely. I’m going to continue to read and buy every single thing you put online, but you are a LIAR, sir.”

If that’s you then, first of all, screw you for calling me names, man – that’s messed up. But here is what happened; it’s one of two things…

1. You attempted something without first going through the inner-success process, in which case nothing you do will ever succeed.

2. You weren’t supposed to keep going. You were on the wrong track. Be grateful for that so-called failure and look for the hidden lesson.

“Failure is success if we learn from it.”
– Malcolm Forbes

So we’ve tasted sweet success and have “arrived”.

“It’s going to be this easy forever,” we think.

Unbeknownst to us we have just unwittingly “arrived” at something akin to a Navy SEAL tryout. One hundred people show up … maybe three live to tell the story and strap on a navy snorkel for duty.

Everything up to this point has been a mere pre-screening process.

It’s like someone has handed us an MPK5 machine gun to use on a target dummy, we experience the joy of violence, and then they take the gun back and say, “Ok, see how fun that was? Now sign up for this thing over here. I know, I know – it says ‘Hell Week.’ Hahaha. Never mind that. It’s just a funny name for it. You’ll survive most likely.”

Enter the Hairy Knuckle Sucking Phase.

Have you ever sucked on a big hairy knuckle?

It. Is. Horrible. You feel like you’re gagging on a whiskery ball of devastation. You beg for God to do a hairy knuckle Heimlich maneuver on you and end your misery, and He does – in about twelve months.

Our job during this phase is merely to stay alive and don’t stop trying to breathe.

The ease with which our initial success came? Replaced with resistance.

We may as well be trying to bench press two planets connected together with a plutonium barbell for all we can tell. And we cannot do that in case I’m not being clear.

The initial excitement about our dream? Converted to torment.

As the reality of what it really takes to succeed in our chosen endeavor sets in and the true level of our abilities is exposed, the bliss of ignorance is promptly transformed into the pain of reality.

The ideas stop flowing.

The money stops coming.

We stop smiling.

At the climax of this apparently sick cosmic joke we hit what appears to be an invisible wall. It’s like an invisible ceiling except for all races and genders equally.

Things stop working.

What made so much sense in the beginning now seems like utter nonsense.

The things that appeared so easy are now almost unbearably difficult.

Whereas previously we were prancing freely and joyfully across a field of wheat like Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, we are now marching painfully and miserably through what appears to be a mixture of boiling hot tar and quick sand.

And this, my friend, is the defining moment.

“When a defining moment comes along, you can do one of two things. Define the moment, or let the moment define you.”
– Kevin Cosner, Tin Cup

What are we going to do? Are we going to keep plowing forward despite the pain and lack of results? Or are we going to quit?

Contrary to what you may be thinking, either way is equally noble depending on the circumstances. But before I explain why, let’s answer this question:

Why does the Hairy Knuckle Sucking Phase (HKSP) exist in the first place?

I want you to start a new habit. Pretend you’re four years old, and start asking “why?” again. Ask it about everything.

There is a reason things happen.

Don’t just assume the worst – or the best – out of ignorance. Ask “why?”.

Look for the reality behind things. Become a truth seeker.

Not doing this would be like going your entire adult life with a guy in a big red Tickle Me Elmo suit following you around and Russian leg sweeping you every 5 minutes and hating it but never really wondering “why is this happening?”

It’s not an exact analogy, but it’s pretty close.

The HKSP exists for the following purposes:

1. To initiate you.

One of the main goals of things like male initiation rites of passage, fraternity hazing, and military boot camps is to get you to identify with this new group of people and way of life – to alter your perception of who you are – on a deep fundamental level.

This works in part because we are at our most programmable state when at our wits end and highly charged with emotion.

Once your new identity is solidly in place you will act accordingly.

Consider the horrors of the HKSP your personal rite of passage.

You go in a burrito maker and come out a  _______________________ (fill in the blank with … whatever you want to be).*

2. To prepare you.

As much as you might like to just dive headlong into the sea of success and start swimming the dream, life is too kind to let that happen. The water is full of sharks you see. And you’re just a little baby sea horse. Your death wish shall not be granted.

If you want to swim with the sharks you have to slowly morph into a freakishly large sea horse that breathes fire out of its nose even while under water. This will really impress the sharks who will consequently not eat you and might even help you find some sea horse success.

The HKSP will assist with your metamorphosis.

3. To protect you.

Success gained quickly is suicide. Without the humbling process of the HKSP the success will go straight to your head and you’ll self-destruct.

Small souls cannot sustain success (say that ten times fast). Your heart must be softened and enlarged by the pain of stretching outside your comfort zone for an extended period of time.  Not many people are willing to do this, and, frankly, I’m thankful for that. Can you imagine if I had to deal with a thousand other people writing blog posts about sea horses, hairy knuckles, and Tickle Me Elmo’s? That would suck!

4. To perfect you.

Your original vision for your venture or project was good, but it wasn’t sufficiently thought through. Most people with the courage to step out and do something big on their own are visionaries with relatively weak structural skills. When forced to systemize the dream they find it extraordinarily hard to bear.

Through the HKSP your original idea will be crystalized and something way cooler than you had in mind will appear.

5.  To qualify you.

Every human being that has ever been and ever will be was born with a mission to accomplish. All our gifts, talents, abilities, inclinations, passions, successes, and memorable experiences up to now have been clues as to what this mission might be.

We’ve had a sneaking suspicion that this new thing we’re attempting may be, if not our main mission, at least a step in that direction. The HKSP is here to let us know if our suspicion was right or not.

If it was right then we will find the desire within us to persevere through the pain and succeed. If it wasn’t, we won’t. We’ll appreciate the lesson learned, scratch that thing off the list of potential callings, realize it was a training exercise for the real deal and keep it moving. And who knows … sometimes “the real deal” is the exact thing we’re scratching off. The timing simply wasn’t right. Remember the three years in between my infomercial CD’s and the $19,000 check?

“I don’t believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.”
-Oprah Winfrey

Sometimes life takes us down a certain road for no other reason than to allow us to experience the joy of that particular journey.

“My dream has been shattered,” you say. Maybe so. But underneath the pieces of your broken dream lies something infinitely greater and more real, if only you don’t lose heart.

So we come to our defining moment – the peak of pain in The Success Process. A still small voice in our head whispers, “Quit now or I am going to kill you myself”. We have no idea who this voice is, but they seem fairly sincere. The pain demands an answer, but we hold off as long as possible unsure of the right thing to do.

This is when being familiar with the process becomes critical. If we are unaware of what’s really going on, we will assume the pain is a sign to stop. But if we understand the process, we know we could be “three feet from gold” as Napoleon Hill put it.

“In moments of doubt in the present, the memory of past experience rises to the surface. Filled with trust in the process, [Masters] trudge on well past the point at which others slow down or mentally quit.”
– Robert Greene, Mastery

If we find the motivation within us to plow through this point of no return and break through the HKSP barrier, we then enter the final phase. I call it Heaven On Planet Earth (HOPE).

HOPE is where you’ve always dreamed of being but have refused to pay the price of admission.

HOPE is what you feel deep down in your bones life is supposed to be like but can’t figure out how to make happen.

HOPE is what you were made for; so expect to be miserable until you get here.

The HOPE phase brings us back full circle to when everything was easy and exciting but with one small difference: it’s a thousand times easier and more exciting.  And it doesn’t go away for a really long time.

We stop seeking for opportunities. Opportunities begin seeking us.

We cease striving for money. We may as well be printing it in our living rooms it comes so easily.

We no longer chase after people. People chase us.

(The only time HOPE goes away is when it is time to move on to something even greater and more intimately aligned with our ultimate life’s mission. Expect to repeat the entire Success Process at that point only on a much more intense level.)

We have paid our dues and have arrived.

It’s like we’ve been arduously climbing a snow-covered mountain for what seems like a decade wearing nothing but underwear and a foggy ski mask. All of a sudden we reach the top and are handed some Gucci winter clothes, the ability to move things with our mind, and a solid gold sled worth a million dollars to slide down with.

All the way down the slope there are tiny elves cheering us on and throwing snowballs at us full of hundred dollar bills that feel like sex when they hit us.

Life is nothing more than a series of mountains placed before us – each bigger than the one before it, each leading us closer and closer to Home. When we get to the end and look back, it won’t be the golden sled rides we value; it will be the snowballs.

Just kidding. It will be who we have become in the process:

A mountain mover.

Question: Where are you at in this process right now? Does any of this ring a bell? Leave a comment below or Elmo will leg sweep you later today when you least expect it. And don’t forget to click the Facebook and Twitter icons to share the love with your friends!

* So let’s say you’re trying to become an actor. And let’s say this because it’s been the funniest example so we’ll keep rolling with it.

You’re trying to become an actor, but you currently have the identity of a burrito maker. This identity is so deeply ingrained in you that you have a hard time not speaking Spanish at auditions. And you don’t even speak Spanish. You have to bring a translator with you to interpret your lines. You sound like Erik Estrada after ten shots of tequila. It’s a mess.

You’re in the new world of acting going through the motions of an actor … but you’re not an actor yet. Not in your mind at least.

You’re auditioning for Hawaii Five-O, but you feel like a chef at Taco Bell because actually you still do that during the day.

You taste a little success with the reverse mortgage gig. Then you enter the HKSP for years. The closest you get to stardom is a back up dancer in a Justin Bieber video. You can’t dance, but the director spotted you in the reverse mortgage thing and you had the right look so they CGI’d your face over the winner of last year’s So You Think You Can Dance body. The video goes viral on YouTube.

Right when the Hairy Knuckle Heat is at it’s hottest … you get your big break. You land a role co-starring with Brad Pitt in a blockbuster movie that will be subliminally preparing the general public for the actual end of the world!

It’s the twenty-sixth movie about the end of the world in one year, and that’s not at all suspicious to you even though you know that the richest most powerful sociopaths in the world finance all the movies and pull all the strings on world events. You’re about to be famous! That is what matters.

Because you paid your dues leading up to the shooting of this movie you’re not just mechanically prepared, you’re psychologically prepared. You did so many of those reverse mortgage shows that you eventually became the star of the commercial once you turned fifty-five years old, joined AARP, and started seeking out restaurants with early bird specials.

You are no longer a burrito maker in your mind. You are an actor. World War Z is a hit, and your career is finally launched. Sure, it took thirty-two years, but it was worth it. Had you received this role thirty years ago when you were acting on the outside but folding burritos on the inside you would have messed the whole movie up. The zombies would have won.

I right now am at that invisible wall not sure what to do or where to go next. I will preserver but unsure were the next door will take me. My thinking has been manipulated and who I am now was not who I was a year ago. I see the transfermation and accept it. The struggle continues as I proceed through the pain and torture to get to that place you call HOPE.
Your blog was helpfull to stay positive and look ahead, thank u.

  21. Very true about having to work on yourself first. For a long time I could feel something between me and the things I want, and it was real, like a concrete barrier right behind my eyes. I’ve spent the last two years reading and studying and meditating to get rid of that barrier.

  22. Hey Preston!
In my mind life has been cruel. I know I am not the only person to see himself/herself in such a mental state, so I don’t want you to think I am going to cry about it. I am not going t cry because I don’t have any tear ducts you see (true).

I am presently in a situation that if I am allowed to get out, will finish me with e-books and seminars and “Gurus” and the like. I don’t have many more years to enjoy and that is what I want to do most of all is to enjoy what is left (I probably don’t have the 30 plus years of which you spoke), but whatever there is I want to enjoy.

Thank you for all that you do for others. You are a nice guy in my book. Thank you for your attempts to help me. I do appreciate them!

  26. I really enjoyed this email, and laughed when you talked about doubting mormans due to my living in this area. I have been in real estate over 21 years, and still have things to learn on investing and reinventing the wheel. I have for the past few years tried to help all of the sellers not loose their homes due to foreclosure and the market, doing BPO’s and hoping somehow to help. This is maining due to husband with cancer, and my schedule for him, and no money when spending 400- 600 a month on pills, and doctor appointments. Thank you Preston I will try to get all this together, so I can afford to make some money also.

  57. Preston,
Great great insight here!! We all need to understand that the things we go through, means we “are just going through” to get to the other side….THE BETTER SIDE 🙂 If you don’t learn about the setbacks or problems and the solutions you find or ASK for help in finding the solutions, you ARE DEFINITELY bound for failure.
It is always a constant in moving forward and telling yourself you ARE moving forward. Keep improving your mind and strengthening your mind and you will go far. There is no SUCCESS unless you go through some of the things in life we feel SUCS!! 🙂
Thanks again and keep up the good work Preston !!

There is a lot to be said about the “PATH”. Every man that journeys on it will tell in different degrees the torments and pleasures along the way. The ‘Humbling’.
Those who in faith act upon their desires steadfastly seem to always have a time in the pleasure zone of success. Where it appears to the uninitiated that the successful one has it so easy he must have some special nack or ability.

I’ve gone to the seminars (several), Listened to many, many webinars……have a realtor who is a friend who plugged me
into the MLS listings for bank-owned properties. We discused
working together on deals….can’t do that because NM has
passed laws stopping a licensed realtor from working with a
non-licensed person. Homes in Santa Fe are now selling for
94% of asking price. One realtor said a house on his street
was on the market for 7 days and sold for 98% of asking price.
All of this adds up to no sucess for me! I’m open for big help!

Wow, Preston, you hit the nail right on the head. You see, I was a military man for all of my adult life. That is who I am. I am slowly changing my identity. But, just like the boot camp analogy you used you do not become a Marine until you graduate. You have to earn the title. I feel the same way about this. If my first check as a real estate investor is $10.00 or $1,000,000.00, I just can’t call myself a real estate investor until I have earned it. I am doing the work and I am exhausted working 76hrs a week and this on the side. I am eager to make that first payday, I will persevere and I will make it. The main difference between this and boot camp is that in boot camp the drill instructors are always in your face. You never have to work in order to find guidance. In this business it seems finding a mentor is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. I did like the message that is portrayed here. Thank you.

Thank you for this story because it feels like you have read my mail. It’s funny but real and it’s really where I am today… I have spent so much money in the last 5 years trying to do this thing. The sad thing is that it’s not even my money, it’s my son’s and still I haven’t made any money in real estate at all.
The irony of this is that no matter what I try to do to change dreams, being a Real Estate Investor still screams way too loud to me in my heart. I thought I did all the right things, yet still never made a penny but I’m still drawn to it and I’m so passionate about it. I’m an ordained minister and we don’t own a house and my son who game me the money still is waiting for a house. All I want is to finance the ministry of building houses for the women and children who are out there lost in the world.
Make enough to give my son a house and help our entire community with their needs. Being an ordained minister, your heart is so not about you but about others, it’s a call from God so I believe this Real Estate Business I believe is from God so I can be in position financially to invest in building up people as I preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Thank you for this story because I’m motivated, I’m never afraid of hard work and I will give time to it to make it work.
I’ll learn all the lessons that I need to learn, because this is way bigger than myself.

I am one of those who have been hesitating about ‘jumping in’. Not so much because I don’t know what to do but because I don’t know how to do it. Making a phone call is easy, but unless you have an idea of what to say, it is not a good call, and you have left the potential investor, seller, buyer with the idea that you are a klutz.

Finally got the pieces of the process in place.
Got an iron clad purchase and sales contract.
    Got a crm tool (Fredomsoft)
Got a tutorial from Patrick Riddle in the Private Money on Demand module that took care of the final concern about contravening the SEC regulations that everybody mentioned.
Have started working on building a list of motivated buyers and making contact.
There is a difference between lazy and not willing to do something when the process is not perfectly clear and there are legal ramifications to your actions.
Have one investor in train and working on more.

    On my way!

I see myself in this success process. I’ve experienced both the failures and successes. I’ve quit when perhaps the success was just about to happen and I’ve kept on going, to experience the success, just when I was about to quit.

Dream or imagine, prepare by studying and learning, and take action. Don’t give up when you think you are on your last breath, for the the fresh air just may be around the rock! And anyway, it’s better to try, and fail, than to not try, and succeed.

  104. It’s truly amazing to grow in areas of life that are not the way you would have design it to go if I were the designer I would never have a problem and would have paved the way of no errors but how could I have grown if I never ever had a problem and knowing that the creator was there to show me that HE is dependable at all times so in this process of getting success it’s not just success I’m looking for it’s good success that keeps going long after I’m gone the seeds that I’ve planted will grow up and become new life to bud and spread just like the smallest seed the mustard yet when it come to full plumage it’s the largest so the mountain is going to be moved because of the faith that I have and the work on the wheel that I am because the potter formed everything in a fashion that pleases HIM so just like the clay in the hands of the potter so are we in the hands of the Almighty God who gives and takes away but blessed be the name of the LORD and thank you P. E. for this platform and an the words of wisdom and like the reluctant astronaut I can’t keep my feet on the ground so my asteroid is on the go to higher ground using momentum moral and motivation to the great thrust to success tell me can you fill this if you can then hold on we’re on the way forward and full steam ahead go go go.

I also fell for the rich over night through real estate. There are strategies as I found that do not require money down, but there are costs such as marketing, escrow, etc. There also is the time factor. One can not just read a book or listen to a tape and get money. There is action to take and costs to pay.
Keep up the good work of giving out the message of hope.

Most of my team dropped off of your marathon blog here at the potty breaks. I crossed the finish line over twenty years ago, shortly after I fired my boss in 1985 and pretended that I was a real estate investor. I never looked back, and the thrill each time that I was again successful lit my fire again. It was war, and that was what made my day, not so much the profits. At one point I decided to be a landlord, and that is the only point that I really wasn’t that thrilled.

Now I wholesale the properties I find from REO Realtors, and I still admire Lee Kearney and how he has made Tampa belong to him. At 78 years old I don’t need that much money, but it is nice to do what is necessary to go and come when I want to. My family is all over the place, and they don’t really need me any more very often, except for my visits to see their families.

Now I just smile at the humor that you use in your blogs, books and emails, I admire your many adventures besides being an investor, and I think that your team does more Wholesaling that you do. Congratulations on your successes. I have never given up; I choose the best options for my goals and press on. I have the faith of a mustard seed, and I can say to that mountain, “MOVE!” and I believe in faith and it happens every time.

Thanks for what you do, Preston. I consider you my friend. God is blessing you and your family. Walk with Him.

  136. Thank you Preston. It’s great to start off the week with a belly laugh, and some great insight. The “sociopaths”, line was too funny and the plain truth. Sometimes nothing is funnier and more frightening then the truth. Thanks for taking the time to elucidate us on the process,
I know it well, I’m 68 years old, minister, father, husband, writer,TV star, (public access in Kona) and on again off again real estate investor (20 deals in 20 years) i. had a great life and I’m enjoying the wisdom years in Hawaii. I love your stuff, you are funny, and smart, and a good Capitalist. My definition of a good capitalist is someone who has not forgotten to act like Christ, or Buddha,or Moses ,or Mohammed. They have not forgotten that helping our brothers and sisters to lift themselves out of the hell world that they are in is where the joy and the self worth comes from in our life. When the sociopaths start saying, ” it’s just business” that’s when Christ starts to fade out of the picture and we have Kapitlism and a corporate run state, which was Mussolini’s definition of fascism. So keep up your ministry, make a lot of money and spend more time with your wife and kids. Aloha, Len

  160. Thanks for the humor and the approach you use to success, what I have been doing has not worked so far. Your method to success provides some new options for me.

  162. Preston:

Great blog post, if more than a little scary! Two Fridays ago I sold my first rehab house. ‘ve been in rentals for 18 years, but had wanted to transition into rehabbing and flipping. I worked myself into financial position, spent over $28K on education, and bought a house before even coming close to finishing my education. I figure you learn best by doing, and by making mistakes. I overspent on the rehab, spending about $94K on the house. I’m proud of how it came out, but I know a lot of things not to do on the next one. I didn’t make $19k. I lost about $10K. The cost of learning by doing. As soon as I close on the sale and have my money in hand, I will be looking for several more reasonable houses. I tell you this because sometimes hairy knuckle sucking comes in other ways.

Despite the loss on the sale, I was still excited to be selling, because it completes the educational rehab and clears me to get on to the next project. I was going to celebrate the next evening, following the sale. Except I woke on Saturday to a first ever seizure or stroke. Still not sure which. An MRI showed something on my brain, possibly a tumor, possibly stroke damage. Investigations go on, but I guess this is kind of serious. But, during the two days I was in the hospital, I kept up with my Real Estate Mogul lessons. Today I’m determining if, assuming the sale closes as planned, I can make an upcoming bootcamp. I’m attending another 4-day training next month.

So, I don’t know where that puts me on your process. But I know, once you’ve prepared yourself, there’s nothing left but to take action and keep on taking action. Just sometimes one has to tweak the actions one takes to make them more effective. Because when the final stroke comes and you recollect what you’ve done, it’s a pity if you can’t say you’ve done “something.”

  163. Very interesting.

However, I suspect that you are really an alien in a little boy costume with cosmic knowledge of the the universe, so I’m gonna listen to you. Although, I admit it is a little scary imagining what you really look like under your little boy costume. I expect you are really about one thousand years old and have lived about a dozen human lifetimes. Either that or you drink waaaaayyyy too much green tea.

Really, thanks for the kick in the pants. I need it fairly often and it is so much better than a leg sweep from Elmo. By the way, I want to go to the next party that Elmo goes to. There were some seriously hot nurses in the background of the pic.

i like the HKSP ,and the phrase that say’s I don’t believe in failure, it is not failure if you enjoyed the process. It took me 5 years to get where I am now in being a real estate investor, never flip a house, bought a house or houses, went to a lots of seminars ,listen to webinars , ordered lots of real estate materials and nothing has worked for me, until I heard of Preston, the man that I know will make things happen for me, I trust him and I like his teaching. So after I get started with this Freedom Soft Real Estate Matchmaking software, I know that it will move and nothing will be impossible for me. Peace, let’s make it happen for me.

  225. Paul Romero July 9, 2013 Reply

You have been videoing my life!!!
After all the preparation phase I jumped all in last year and risked “Everything!!” After some some final educational refinement and just a few short months worth of work before having to abandon ship to return to the J.O.B. for the summer in order to gather up enough “working” income to keep everything from totally collapsing, 60 days later I was rewarded with not just one but two $16,000 checks–Thank you Universe I am very grateful for that motivational gesture.
We then (I have a partner since I took my show on the road almost 1000 miles away to better market) put it all back in doing what we “thought” we knew as the simple steps to reach HOPE, And NOTHING!! for 5 months when we we’re given a tidbit ($3500) to keep us going. But then again another 3 months of NOTHING!! until our 4th deal (5k) was again just enough for us keep up, and keep going. This was then followed by another 3 months of nothing and we finally picked up another sizable deal, one large and one small (2 actually) totaling 12,500 in June. But again we had fallen behind and this was only enough to get caught up and put some go forth $$ in the account( Which we are doing now as June was another “Nothing” month.
But we persevere knowing that if you eat enough Hairy Knuckle Sandwiches for lunch day after day (and these aren’t the store bought kind either, these are Really Nasty ones you make yourself at home and eat them cold the next day) that day by day we work ourselves one day closer to H.O.P.E.
But here’s the most interesting part for me. Over the course of this whole journey I have been receiving one gift after another. Personal growth on all levels–Mental, Physical, & Spiritual has been growing also day by day from these gifts. All of which I know have been coming to me–even though at first i didn’t even know I was seeking them–because they are all an integral part of my reaching the Financial plateau I originally had set out to achieve.
I had NO Idea there were so many missing pieces in my life which I needed to become aware of, reprogram myself to overcome, learn new thoughts and ideas, APPLY Them, and keep the good stuff and toss out the stuff that doesn’t work for me before I would have the chance to step through the invisible barrier into HOPE–the place I originally thought I would reach in like 6 months.
I wanted to relay my story for all those who are going through this, read and love your post–as I have–and yet still have that incling of doubt in their minds.
You Must Keep Going, Period! That’s it, just keep going, and believing, and you will eventually, when Your time is right, reach all that you strive to achieve.
And Keep reading Prestons stuff, not just cuz it’s funny and entertaining–although that certainly makes the pill easier to swallow–but because it’s Real, and it’s Great motivation for whenever you feel yourself drifting.
Thanks Preston I am grateful for having been lead to you as well as all the others who are helping me transform my whole life–HOPE is just around the corner!!! I Am A Believer, I Always Believe!!

  289. Preston,

This REALLY hit home for me as I am in the HNSP RIGHT NOW, and have been for the past year.

I have really been in quite a funk lately, peaking this week. I have been trying to push on even during times that I don’t really want to.

I read a quote somewhere that stated that when you do those things you don’t really want to do or feel like doing at the time, is the time that you are growing the most. While I may only be growing very minimally, I can take stock that I am growing none-the-less.

I am still pushing on towards my goals and dreams and know that I have the tools to make it happen and will appreciate the HOPE phase that much more when, not if, I get there.

I also read a quote once that says that if you aren’t reaching the success you want, there must be something you don’t know. I am still trying to learn and figure out that nugget that will put me where I want to be.

Thanks for the encouragement, especially at a time that I need it most!

Thank you for this inspirational blog! Tremendous food for thought as you have clearly hit a nerve for me in how I have unsuccessfully prospered financially to date but have gained a great deal of experience in real estate investment. I believe the Holy Spirit moved me to take the time to read this one in a million emails in my Inbox about how to move forward for the rest of my life at just turning 65! I quit real estate investment 19 months ago after spending over $150K in 5+ years in pursuit of success without a single $1 in profit! As a fellow brother in the Lord, I felt you would have some great words of wisdom — and you certainly have!! Thank you! I have new HOPE! //Michael

  346. Thank you so much for this article…I especially like the Success Line…it puts into pictures what the process is truly like! It ain’t about straight and easy, it is about getting your feet wet and following the process no matter what direction it takes you. Bottom line, I need the drop the Wii controller and take control of my future…I’m at the wall…it’s really time to knock it down and take over the Hairy Beast!

  347. All joking aside, this article really moved me. With regard to the process, I’m in the HKSP phase. I’ve had flashes of brilliance. Now, things have slowed dramatically. Yet, those brief moments of success propel me forward. My God given fortitude is lined with titanium. I won’t quit until I scale my Everest like like situation and ski down on my platinum sled. Thank you Preston.

  348. I guess I am at the HKSP! I bought my first property 5 months ago and have found my second one. Financing is going to be the hurdle this time, but maybe NOT! Waiting to read more of what he has to say..

A million thanks for sharing your story, it gives me renew strength and it also awaken the fire of hope within me. May you continue to be the best you!

  358. Hey Preston,

    Very creative.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said think like a four year old. Question EVERYTHING.
Once we lose that ability, to think like a child…we all need to be grown-ups now…the magic goes away.
Every one of you know what I’m talking about.

I think it would also help every one of us if we shut off the tv, radio, cell phone, COMPUTER and or whatever else it is that is distracting(read controlling) you. Listen to that voice in your mind…
that everyone has but most don’t take the time to listen to.
It knows what you want and need and knows how to get it.
We don’t take the time to listen to it.
How can you, with all of the distractions we are bombarded with on a daily basis.

    Take some time.
    Listen to that voice.

I know it sounds scary but… you can do it…

    IT knows…

    Love and Light

P.S. you also might be able to hear ELMO sneakin up to leg sweep you again and be able to avoid it!!

  366. Gotta admit, didn’t expect this from Ely. There’s treasure within these words. And it isn’t the buried-away type of treasure that’s rusted over wth archaic niceties manufactured by modern-day Dale Carnegie sound-alikes. Trust me, from someone who’s enduring, Ely’s nailed it. That pain lies waiting. Not predictably but sure enough, you’ll reach it during your path towards something new and untried. When you round that corner, and come up to it, what you see is not a fork in the road but instead a defining moment. Here the quote Ely introduces is like a dagger that’s primed either to strike at your heart and defeat you, or slay the monster dragon and free you. What’s interesting and true is that here, at this inevitable point of the success path, the choice you make will self-prophesize your journey’s destination. What you do now, in this instance will either end of changing your life (if you decide to let go of the past and go ahead into the future however uncertain you feel) or end the life of this your creative pursuit. I enjoyed this piece very much. My sole criticism is it’s execessive humor that detracts rather than advance the story. That’s because Ely is actually more genune in telling the truth about the hardships and joy that are inextricable parts of the ride to success than he is funny in trying to soften the reality of it.

  367. Thanks for the article! I think it sounds very truthful, can’t wait to read more soon.

  386. Halloween advice for new real estate investors:

Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you’re in trouble if you recognize this one), the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

If you find a town which looks deserted, there’s probably a good reason for it. Don’t stop and look around.

A vampire bat came flapping in from the night covered in fresh blood and parked himself on the roof of the cave to get some sleep.
Pretty soon all the other bats smelled the blood and began to hassle him about where he got it. He told them to knock it off and let him get some sleep but they persisted until finally he gave in.
“OK, follow me,” he said and flew out of the cave with hundreds of bats behind him.
Down through a valley they went, across a river and into a forest full of trees. Finally he slowed down and all the other bats excitedly milled around him.
“Now, do you see that tree over there?” he asked. “Yes, yes, yes!” the bats all screamed in a frenzy.
“Good,” said the first bat, “Because I DIDN’T!”

If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the time to move in with the in-laws!!!
This also applies to houses that had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed satanic practices in your house.

Very enlightening post on how one truly achieves success. It is so true that a person must be willing to stay out of their comfort zone long enough if expecting any success and be willinng for failures along the way. As long as a person fails forward or learns something from every failure about what to do better and implements the needed changes in their life, they can then expect success to be attracted to them.

I came back to good, even better health than I have ever enjoyed. I am now writing a book for Amazon Kindle about wellness. Selling nutritional supplements through Amway. Selling other Amway products, too. Running my foreclosure property maintenance biz and now looking for homes to refer to my flippers. Meanwhile I am homeless, lost my apartment while in the hospital so much. I live in my truck and in hotels for now. But my Amazon and E-Bay stores are doing great and about to pay off big due to holidays, so I will be able to pay off all debt, buy a home. Buildup my mutual funds and retire wealthy.

The world is filled with people who have taken a class in”The Artist’s Way”, attended countless self-realization retreats, and bought every late night infomercial package promising wealth and prosperity with little or no effort. You, with the big brain, come along to tell them this is not the answer. They actually need to know who they are, have a vision and what else? Oh no! They need to work hard, not give up, digest the wisdom and pointed humor of Mark Twain and you? You will then sprinkle a little more fairy dust on them in the form of advice on Flipping Houses. 470. Thanks, I liked the quotes. Especially the one about the confidence and ignorance. It is so true. There are people who have an iron-clad proof and knowledge that something is impossible to achieve. Yet there are some ignorant people who do not know about it: they just do it.

Thank you for your emails. I am a Union Electrician and I thought to myself this is what I always wanted, but it’s not I want more out my life. I apologise for not writing you when you first e-mailed. The ideas that you give out are true you have to fight through to get there. My problem is I don’t know what I want. I want to be wealthy but don’t know if flipping houses or starting something is what my calling is. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the chance to change.

    Thank you,

Thank you, Preston. You are exactly right. There is a process to success and there are very painful periods one seems to have to go through. I had great success with several no money down deals and got very nice checks for a period of time, (several years,) and then bit off more than I could chew, with a commercial building rehab, and then lost my shirt, along with two other investors. I quit investing. I want to get started again, with your help. I very much appreciate your blog, as it made me realize, I had a very successful thing going, but bumped into the next level of difficulty and then quit.

You have made me realize that I just need to keep going, despite the pain.

Your inspiring article made me realize everyone goes through these periods, and I should not have lost confidence because of this.

  518. Preston,

Thank you! Thank you! This is great stuff, I can’t wait to get started, the right way!

  519. Preston,

What an interesting analogy of the continual ups and downs of our journey through the pursuit of reaching success! Testing of who we are on the inside out to see who will stand as a Pillar of Strength in a World of Storm. Without the test, we have no Testimony! Those of us who Believe that we will say to this mountain to move and do not doubt, IT SHALL BE MOVED!!!

Our failures in the worlds eyes, are only stepping stones to our highest calling to make a difference in this world…and to literally bring HOPE-Heaven On Planet Earth into existence, as we are all called to do!:) Are we tough enough to see it through no matter the resistance that we will be up against?

Only true Warriors who follow the Commands and Principles in the Bible, The Greatest Book that was ever written as our Life Guide and Coach, will pass the test and Rise to the Top as The Chosen Cream of the Crop…Harvest Reapers. Lots of work to do, and we need the right team who are uncompromising, who have been through hell on earth who get it to bring Light to a darkened world.

It is time for us to not tolerate the crap that is being dished out to us in various forms, being held down by our government, accepting living in poverty and lack, or watching so many in need here in our own nation, and around the world who are suffering! God chose us to be Kingdom Royalty-Kings Kids, where we take Ownership and take back all the money and resources that the enemy has stolen from us in our years of pursuit of a dream or a Vision! No more being complacent…we are getting the Wealth of the Wicked and getting it placed in the Hands of The Righteous so we can do what we were put on this earth to do!!! To Dominate and Rule and Reign!!!

To transform neighborhoods through our Real Estate Ventures or whatever else we are called to do, while at the same time Transforming Lives and Bringing The Kingdom of God here on earth in preparation for the return of Jesus Christ!

Thanks for your Faith and Leadership!

    Rule & Reign Management

P.S. By the way, I was attempting to join your Real Estate Mogul program the other day so we can Join Forces to stop this ridiculous attempt of wall street to take away our rights of home ownership and I would meet my high goals of being successful now in all Real Estate Investing!!! As I attempted to click on sign up, it went automatically back to another webinar…:(

P.S.S. In case you do not realize it, you are an end time Warrior and Ambassador on our Special Forces. But of course, You probably already knew that.:)

  522. Mr. Ely,

What a great article and what great timing. It speaks loudly to my spirit at this time in my life. A friend and I was just talking today about successes and failures (failures that aren’t failures but successes in disguise). I believe as you, if you try something and it doesn’t turn out the way you dreamed it would it is only because you are not ready to receive it yet or that path just isn’t for you and who knows better than our creator when we are ready.

Thank you for the motivation, laughs and food for thought.

  523. Great article!!! Also loved the quotes!

Wow! Such an inspiring post Preston. For real. Posts like this should encourage those of us who are in our comfort zones (including myself), to get out the ole oil can, lube up the gears of our inner-selves, and get them rolling! That’s the only way to get through the pain in order to achieve the success that we deserve…and should ultimately have.

For me, my “comfort zone” is relying on Corporate America to provide me with this false sense of financially stability. When in fact, I should be doing whatever it takes to stabilize my own financial future. I can’t allow Corporate American to dictate what my financial future will be. It’s not up to them…IT’S UP TO ME!

I remember many, many moons ago I was up late one night listening to one of those infomercials. I can’t recall exactly what the infomercial was for, and really wasn’t paying attention to it because I was half asleep anyway. I don’t know if this was consciously or subconsciously, but there was one thing this guy said that stuck in my mind, even to this day. He said, “Never let someone else determine how much you are worth.” I didn’t know what he meant, but he gave a quick analogy that clicked with me. He painted a picture of an employee who went above and beyond his normal job duties for an entire week. However, no matter what he did that week, he was still only worth that same $300.00 (or whatever dollar a week he was getting) to the company. So in essence, it was the company that determined how much he was worth.

With that being said, this post will definitely help me to get back on track (mentally). I plan to utilize a recent course that I purchased from Preston, along with other material, to get out of my comfort zone and on to financial freedom.

We all need a little kick in the rear from time to time in order to keep us focused, or even to see if we’re still awake. This post should definitely be a wake up call for those of us who are afraid to take that step to our own financial freedom…whatever road that may be!

Thanks again Preston! Keep inspiring us to succeed!

  526. It was awesome and so true!

  527. Sad but true. I hate to say this but money would help the world go around a lot smoother. I have many projects but nothing to get it off of the ground. Pay check to pay check gets a little sickening from all of the time seemingly endless, so more often than a little it seems to just be part of the norm. It sucks!!

  528. Great blog!!

  570. I have a good question Preston, so if this house flipping in real estate is such a good, profitable and easy to do thing? than why have you gone to the selling
Dvd’s on how to succeed at flipping houses? Why not just keep on buying houses and keep making money that way??? Just wondering! But as for your blog it was good and yeh I always ponder on the thought of how to make it ever since I was in my early twentys, like you say I wake up every day thinking how can I make money and be successful. I also am very sceptical of those people out there such as your self that sell those videos because like the saying goes if it sounds to good to be true it probably isn’t.
